Document drafting assistant

A finished sentence is not a finished document.

A document drafting assistant assembles reviewable drafts from approved instructions, facts, templates and clauses. The pattern Werkon would validate tracks the source and reason for each change, checks controlled fields and surfaces conflicts before release. Qualified professionals retain legal, commercial and client decisions, approve the exact version, and separately authorize any signature, delivery or filing workflow.

Drafting job boundary

Assemble the draft. Keep professional authorship visible.

A usable first draft needs more than fluent text. Four boundaries preserve the instructions, sources, controlled language and decisions behind it.

01

Matter, instruction, and document scope

Bind client, matter and engagement access; document type, purpose, audience, jurisdiction, forum, language, deadline and confidentiality; responsible professional, reviewer, signatory and recipient; client instructions and prohibited positions before source retrieval or drafting.

Required evidence: Client, matter and engagement identifiers, ethical-wall and conflicts result, document and workflow identifiers, purpose and audience, jurisdiction and forum, language, instructions and version, prohibited content, professional and reviewer, signatory and recipient authority, confidentiality, deadline and expiry.

02

Source facts, templates, and clauses

Preserve original matter records and exact fact locations; resolve conflicts and effective times; select approved templates, official forms, clauses, definitions and style rules by scope and version; lock mandatory language; and show coverage gaps instead of filling them with invented content.

Required evidence: Source record and digest, fact identifier and value, exact page or field, source and effective time, confidence, conflict and correction; template, form, clause and style identifiers, jurisdiction, document type, purpose, owner, approval, effective dates, eligibility, mandatory status, dependencies and retirement.

03

Provenance-rich first draft

Assemble deterministic fields, clauses, definitions, cross-references, schedules, exhibits and signature blocks; propose bounded connective prose only from approved inputs; label every passage by source and method; validate completeness and consistency; and surface deviations, alternatives and unresolved questions.

Required evidence: Draft and section identifiers, input and template digests, clause and fact mappings, deterministic field values, generated-passage sources, prompt and model version where used, locked text, insertion, omission and modification reasons, defined-term and cross-reference graph, validation results, unresolved field and draft digest.

04

Qualified review, release, and correction

Have named professionals verify instructions, facts, law, citations, commercial and legal positions, language, form and recipient; accept or reject every material deviation; obtain client and signatory decisions where required; release only the approved version; and preserve signature, delivery, filing, acceptance, withdrawal and correction separately.

Required evidence: Reviewer identity and authority, redline, comment and resolution, fact and citation checks, legal and commercial decisions, client instruction or approval, accepted deviations, approval and document digest, release scope, signatory authorization, signature, delivery, filing and acceptance receipts, supersession, withdrawal and correction history.

Instruction-to-release path

Five stages from approved sources to released document.

Each stage adds a different kind of authority. The assistant can organize the evidence but cannot collapse them into automatic approval.

  1. 01

    Register the drafting request

Confirm matter access, conflicts and engagement scope; record document type, purpose, audience, jurisdiction, forum, language and deadline; capture approved client and professional instructions; and name reviewer, signatory, recipient and prohibited positions.

    Owner
    Matter owner and responsible professional
    Evidence
Matter and engagement, access and conflicts, request and purpose, document type, audience, jurisdiction and forum, language, instruction version, prohibited content, reviewer, signatory, recipient, confidentiality, deadline and intake receipt.
  2. 02

    Resolve facts and controlled language

Collect approved matter records, prior versions and authorities; normalize parties, dates, amounts and defined concepts without losing source values; resolve conflicts; select eligible templates, forms and clauses; and expose missing schedules, approvals, facts and source permissions.

    Owner
Matter team, knowledge owners, and records owners
    Evidence
Source records and digests, fact map and conflicts, prior document and decision state, template and clause versions, eligibility and owner, authority and effective date, mandatory and optional language, schedule requirements, missing input, correction and source-set digest.
  3. 03

Assemble and validate the first draft

Populate deterministic fields, insert approved clauses, build definitions, cross-references, schedules, exhibits and signature blocks, propose bounded prose with source links, preserve all deviations and run structural, numeric, citation, terminology and completeness checks.

    Owner
Drafting workflow with named matter operator
    Evidence
Draft id and digest, fact and clause mappings, field provenance, generated-passage source set, locked language, inserted, omitted and modified text, version comparison, definitions and references, validation output, alternatives, uncertainty and abstention.
  4. 04

    Review substance and resolve redlines

Require qualified review of client instructions, facts, legal authority, citations, form, language, commercial and legal positions, confidentiality and privilege; route open questions; accept or reject material changes with reasons; and preserve every review round and client decision.

    Owner
Qualified professional and authorized client decision maker
    Evidence
Review assignment and authority, redline and comment, issue and disposition, supporting source, factual and citation verification, legal and commercial decisions, client question and instruction, deviation acceptance, version, approval state and unresolved blocker.
  5. 05

    Approve, release, and reconcile

Freeze the approved document and evidence set, authorize the exact audience and use, obtain signatures separately, deliver or file through approved channels, reconcile external receipts and rejection, preserve follow-up and reopen, supersede, withdraw or correct every affected copy when inputs change.

    Owner
Approver, signatory, filing or delivery owner, and records owner
    Evidence
Approved version and digest, approver and time, release purpose and audience, signatory and signature state, delivery or filing authorization, transmission and external receipt, acceptance or rejection, record copy, follow-up, changed source, supersession, withdrawal, correction propagation and harm record.

Authority model

Let systems assemble. Keep professional positions with people.

Facts, document mechanics, proposed prose and professional judgment have different owners. A safe draft preserves those layers.

01

Deterministic document and provenance controls

Code should own matter binding, source and version identity, template and clause eligibility, exact field population, locked text, definitions, cross-references, validation, document digests, release checks, external receipts and correction propagation.

  • Client, matter, engagement, ethical-wall, role, purpose, jurisdiction, forum, language, confidentiality, template, clause, authority, recipient and retention checks
  • Stable party, date, amount and fact identifiers; original source location; effective time; deterministic formatting and arithmetic; clause-condition evaluation; mandatory-text and allowed-variable enforcement
  • Defined-term, section, exhibit, schedule and cross-reference integrity; missing and conflicting fields; citation format; duplicate and inconsistent names; template deviation and prior-version comparison
  • Draft and source-set digests, reviewer role, approval and release scope, signature and delivery separation, external receipt, visible supersession, withdrawal, correction, access expiry, export and restore checks
02

Bounded drafting and comparison support

A model may propose grounded wording, summaries and issue lists. It cannot create facts or authority, select a client position, alter locked text, perform hidden calculations, approve substance or release a document.

  • Connective prose and plain-language alternatives based only on approved fact, clause and authority inputs, with sentence-level source links, uncertainty and abstention
  • Issue spotting for missing definitions, inconsistent terminology, conflicting provisions, absent schedules, unusual deviations and questions for reviewers, without declaring legal effect
  • Comparisons among template, prior draft, counterparty document and current version that distinguish exact changes, moved text, semantic candidates and reviewer conclusions
  • First-pass summaries, cover notes and review checklists from approved templates and document evidence, without advice, new commitments, unapproved recipients, signature claims or filing representations
03

Qualified professional and client authority

Named professionals and authorized clients determine instructions, facts, law, positions, material language, advice, approval, signature, filing, release and remedial action.

  • Engagement and purpose, client identity and instructions, confidentiality and privilege, conflicts, governing law, jurisdiction, forum, material facts, objectives, audience and disclosure
  • Legal authority and citations, interpretation, claims and defenses, obligations, representations, warranties, covenants, remedies, risk allocation, negotiation and commercial terms
  • Form sufficiency, document strategy, client advice, certification, signatory authority, execution, delivery, service, filing, tribunal communication, correction, withdrawal and remedial measures
  • Professional competence and supervision, template and clause governance, source and tool approval, client communication, training, security incident, expansion, rollback, provider replacement and retirement

Drafting-system components

Build a document that can explain every sentence.

Instructions, facts, precedents and approved positions change independently. Four components preserve what entered each version and who accepted it.

01

Matter, instruction, and fact registry

Version client, matter, engagement, access, purpose, audience, jurisdiction, forum, language, instructions and prohibited positions; preserve source records, stable facts, exact locations, effective times, conflicts, permissions, confidentiality and corrections.

Operating contract: Matter note is not client instruction, extracted value is not verified fact, current value is not historical value, one party name is not every legal identity, source access is not disclosure permission and fluent text cannot resolve conflicting evidence.

02

Template, clause, and authority library

Store approved templates, official forms, clauses, definitions, schedules and style rules with owners, jurisdiction, document type, purpose, effective dates, mandatory text, allowed variables, eligibility logic, dependencies, authority sources, review and retirement state.

Operating contract: Official form is not complete filing, word template may need modification, precedent is not advice, prior approval is not universal approval, retrieved clause is not applicable language, proposed rule is not current and expired text cannot remain silently eligible.

03

Draft, provenance, and deviation ledger

Bind every field, clause and proposed passage to its source and method; preserve template and source-set digests, prompts and model versions where used, locked text, alternatives, insertions, omissions and changes, definitions, references, validation output and unresolved questions.

Operating contract: Generated is not authored authority, source-linked is not true, valid structure is not legal sufficiency, no lint error is not complete review, tracked change is not accepted change and clean copy cannot erase its redline or source history.

04

Review, release, and correction ledger

Preserve review assignments, comments, redlines, decisions, client instructions, approvals and exact document digests; authorize audience and purpose; separate signature, delivery, filing and acceptance; maintain record copies; and propagate supersession, withdrawal and correction.

Operating contract: Reviewed is not approved, approved is not signed, signed is not delivered, transmitted is not filed or served, accepted is not legally sufficient, one release is not permission for every audience and correction cannot erase the prior version or decision chain.

Delivery path

Prove one document type before adding clauses.

A polished benchmark can hide unsupported language. Begin with a bounded document whose source, precedent, redline and final receipt can be reconstructed.

  1. 01

    Observe current drafting

Follow instruction capture, matter research, fact verification, precedent and clause selection, assembly, original drafting, citations, defined terms, cross-references, schedules, redlines, client decisions, approval, signature, delivery or filing, rejection, correction, staff effort, provider cost, incidents and known harm.

  2. 02

    Define the document contract

Name instruction, source, fact, template, form, clause, definition, authority, field, passage, provenance, deviation, validation, reviewer, client decision, approval, signatory, audience, release, receipt, supersession, correction and harm fields and owners.

  3. 03

    Run shadow drafting

    Replay ordinary, missing-fact, conflicting-source, stale-template, wrong-jurisdiction, mandatory-clause, conditional-clause, defined-term, cross-reference, numeric, citation, counterparty-redline, privileged, multilingual, inaccessible, prompt-injection, signature, filing-rejection and corrected-document cases against qualified drafts.

  4. 04

    Release one controlled document workflow

Limit matters, document types, jurisdictions, templates, clauses and outputs; require source links and material-deviation review; lock mandatory text; block unresolved fields; preserve manual drafting and redlines; keep signature and filing separate; support export, rollback, correction and independent stop authority.

  5. 05

    Review after real releases

Compare supported propositions, missing and conflicting fields, template and clause applicability, validation findings, reviewer edits, client changes, release errors, external rejection, correction latency, staff impact, confidentiality, provider and operating cost and harm before adding document types or autonomy.

Drafting safeguards

Six controls before a draft reaches its reviewer.

The strongest controls make unsupported language, stale precedent and invisible deviations difficult to hide behind polished prose.

Matter, instruction, purpose, and recipient
Bind stable client, matter and engagement identifiers, access and conflicts, precise document purpose and audience, jurisdiction and forum, responsible professional, reviewer, signatory and recipient; version instructions; prohibit cross-matter reuse; and block drafting when authority or purpose is unclear.
Source facts and effective-state provenance
Preserve original records and exact fact locations, retain source and effective times, normalize without overwriting, distinguish alleged, verified, agreed and disputed states, surface conflicts and missing evidence and propagate corrections through every affected draft and release.
Approved templates, clauses, and locked text
Govern owner, scope, jurisdiction, document type, purpose, effective dates, mandatory status, allowed variables, eligibility, dependencies and retirement; separate official forms from editable templates; reject stale or inapplicable text; and require reason and review for each deviation.
Passage provenance and deterministic validation
Label deterministic, template, clause, source-quoted and proposed text; retain prompts and versions where generation assists; verify names, dates, amounts and citations deterministically; check definitions, references, schedules and signature blocks; and show alternatives, uncertainty and abstention.
Qualified redline, approval, and release
Require named review of facts, law, citations, legal and commercial positions, confidentiality, privilege, form and audience; preserve comments, redlines and client decisions; approve an exact digest; authorize release separately; and never infer signing, delivery or filing permission.
Confidentiality, access, resilience, and correction
Minimize matter data in tools, isolate tenants and matters, protect privileged and restricted sources, scope provider and recipient access, monitor exports and downstream copies, test backup and restore, preserve complete evidence export and visibly supersede, withdraw and correct every affected version.

Outcome proof

Measure supported language, not pages generated.

A longer draft is not a better draft. Proof follows instructions, sources, controlled language, deviations, decisions and the exact released version.

Baseline

  • Drafting work by client, matter, document type, purpose, jurisdiction, instruction, source fact, template, clause, authority, passage, provenance, deviation, validation, reviewer, client decision, approval, release, signature, delivery, filing, acceptance, correction and known harm
  • Evidence by source and document digest, exact fact location and effective time, template and clause version, eligibility and approval, authority source, field mapping, generated-passage source set, prompt and model version, deterministic check, redline, reviewer decision and released-document digest
  • Manual intake, source review, fact verification, precedent selection, assembly, original drafting, citation, validation, redline, client question, approval, signing, delivery, filing, rejection, correction and records effort, queue age, interruption, provider fees and operating cost
  • Wrong matter, instruction, fact, source, template, clause, authority, jurisdiction, party, date, amount, citation, definition, reference, schedule, position, recipient, version, approval, signature, filing, acceptance, correction, access, retention, recovery and harm

Outcome evidence

  • More eligible requests reach professionals with bounded instructions, verified source facts, approved precedents, provenance-rich drafts, visible deviations, validation results, owned questions and complete redlines without granting the assistant professional authorship
  • Fewer invented, wrong-matter, stale-template, inapplicable-clause, inconsistent, uncited, broken-reference, unsupported or unauthorized passages enter released documents, and every accepted, rejected, modified and corrected position retains qualified attribution and reason
  • Professionals spend less avoidable time copying approved language, repopulating fields and finding routine inconsistencies while retaining complete instruction, fact, legal, commercial, drafting, review, client-advice, signature, filing, correction and stop authority, measured by document type and risk class
  • Comparable cycles expose source coverage, missing and conflicting facts, template and clause drift, generated-passage edits, reviewer burden, client changes, release and filing rejection, correction latency, staff impact, confidentiality incidents, provider cost and harm without assuming legal accuracy or favorable outcome

Guardrails

  • Client, matter, instruction, source, fact, template, clause, authority, passage, reviewer, recipient or version is misbound; exact provenance or redline is lost; or confidential or privileged data crosses matter, ethical-wall, role, purpose, recipient or provider boundaries
  • Unofficial template appears as completed form, prior precedent appears applicable, retrieved clause appears approved, proposed law appears current, inferred fact appears verified, generated citation appears real, clean copy hides deviations or signature field appears authority
  • The assistant invents facts or authority, selects client or legal positions, silently changes mandatory language, performs hidden arithmetic, gives advice, approves substance, signs, sends or files, suppresses conflicts or learns silently from professional and client decisions
  • Template and clause changes are missed, corrected facts do not reach drafts, reviewers see the wrong version, providers or networks fail without manual continuity, restore loses comments or duplicates releases, downstream copies remain current after withdrawal or expansion precedes measured harm

Drafting-assistant fit

Use this pattern when every passage can show its source.

Good reason to begin

  • The organization can bound one document type, define matter and instruction scope, jurisdictions, source records, templates, clauses, required checks and release paths and name professional, knowledge, client, signatory, filing, records, security, cost, harm and stop owners.
  • Instructions, sources, facts, precedents, clauses, authorities, drafts, passages, deviations, redlines, approvals and released versions retain stable identifiers, timestamps and versions; originals reopen; comparisons are inspectable; and the full evidence chain is exportable.
  • Representative ordinary, missing, conflicting, stale, wrong-jurisdiction, mandatory, conditional, cross-reference, numeric, citation, counterparty, privileged, multilingual, inaccessible, injection, signing, filing-rejection, withdrawn and corrected cases plus qualified documents exist for shadow evaluation.
  • Professionals can reject facts and clauses, edit freely, preserve manual drafting and independent review, change templates, block release, revoke access, reconcile downstream copies, correct or withdraw documents, export evidence, roll back and retire the assistant safely.

Resolve before beginning

  • Client and matter scope, instructions, jurisdiction, professional responsibility, source ownership, fact verification, precedent governance, clause eligibility, client approval, supervision, confidentiality, privilege, signature, filing, recordkeeping or correction ownership is unclear or disputed.
  • Original records cannot be reopened, facts lack stable identifiers, templates and clauses are not versioned, mandatory text cannot be locked, passage provenance and redlines are lost, downstream documents cannot be reconciled or no qualified professional can review and approve the output.
  • The desired first step permits unrestricted matter data, invented facts or citations, autonomous legal positions, silent clause rewriting, hidden calculations, unreviewed external delivery, inferred signature or filing authority, removal of manual drafting or invisible learning from client work.
  • The business case depends on legal accuracy, enforceability, filing acceptance, reduced professional review, exact drafting speed, savings, implementation time, favorable negotiations, case success or another legal or financial outcome.
